Equal Rights Coalition

A clearer, safer platform for a global coalition advancing LGBTI rights.

Equal Rights Coalition (ERC) is a global coalition of Member States and civil society working to protect and advance the rights of LGBTI people. Because that work takes place across very different political and security contexts, the website needs to do two things at once: help people find reliable information quickly, and support safer, more controlled publishing behind the scenes.

We supported ERC with a WordPress refresh designed for multilingual, day-to-day use—prioritising legibility, clear navigation, and privacy-aware defaults so the Secretariat team can keep the site current without relying on developers for every update.

The Challenge

ERC’s website had grown into a dense hub of news, publications, and resources. The challenge was to make that breadth feel navigable rather than overwhelming—especially for first-time visitors—while keeping the publishing system maintainable for a small team.

Security and privacy were central. The site needed to minimise risk from harassment and targeted attention in hostile contexts, and avoid unnecessary data collection. At the same time, it needed practical workflows that make it easier to publish time-sensitive updates, manage multilingual content, and maintain consistent structure over time.

What We Did

We refined the information structure and page layouts to make the site simpler to scan, while keeping ERC’s existing brand direction.

On the build side, we implemented a modular WordPress system that supports a dedicated News & Resources publishing flow with filtering designed around how people actually search (for example by type, topic, and country), plus clear rules for combining filters. We also introduced related content patterns to help visitors discover relevant resources without getting lost.

The site launched with a multilingual setup for English and Spanish, with room for future languages, alongside a workflow to support consistent translation and content duplication where needed. We designed an interactive member-state and civil society map experience intended to be useful without over-collecting personal data, and simplified the “Get in touch” form to reduce friction while keeping data capture minimal.

Throughout, we prioritised privacy-aware defaults and clear handover guidance so ERC can publish confidently—particularly for politically sensitive information and fast-moving updates.

Impact

The refreshed site makes it easier to navigate a broad set of resources without losing the nuance of ERC’s work. Clearer pathways into news, publications, and thematic areas—alongside structured filtering and related content—help people get to the right information faster, whether they are returning stakeholders or first-time visitors.

Behind the scenes, the new setup supports safer, more controlled publishing. By taking a privacy-first approach—data minimisation, sensible access patterns, and maintainable workflows—the Secretariat team is better equipped to manage sensitive content while protecting staff and communities from unnecessary exposure. Just as importantly, the modular system reduces day-to-day friction, making it easier to keep the site accurate and up to date over time.
