Not A Phase

Resilient digital infrastructure for a leading trans-led charity, built for safety, visibility, and community care.

Not A Phase is a trans-led charity supporting trans and gender-diverse adults through advocacy, community projects, and direct funding.

In a climate where trans communities face escalating hostility, a website isn’t just a brand touchpoint—it’s essential digital infrastructure people rely on for safety and support. As a queer and trans-led studio, we partnered with Not A Phase to redesign their digital home, ensuring it remains a reachable, trustworthy gateway for the community.

The Challenge

The site needed to perform several high-stakes roles: signal immediate trust, maintain rigorous WCAG accessibility, and reflect the bold energy of the community.

As the organisation grew, the structure had to accommodate evolving programmes—from fitness classes to peer support. Our challenge was to architect a user journey that served diverse audiences (members, donors, and first-time visitors) without compromising the site’s clarity or its mission as a digital sanctuary.

What We Did

Working within updated brand guidelines from Weirdo, we redesigned key areas of the site to increase interaction while keeping accessibility central. We introduced a robust light/dark theme toggle, providing users with agency over their visual experience—a core tenet of inclusive design.

We re-engineered the Members’ Area to be intuitive and member-first. By implementing a modular calendar and list view for classes, we significantly reduced friction for users and simplified recurring event management for the team. Across desktop and mobile, we built layouts that reflow cleanly, ensuring that merch and donation flows remain dependable as a primary source of the charity’s funding.

Impact

This work provided Not A Phase with a strengthened digital foundation that matches the scale of their impact. By applying our expertise in community-led UX, we have protected team capacity, allowing energy to flow into community care rather than manual site upkeep.

For the community and supporters alike, the site is now a clearer, safer entry point. It signals belonging and makes life-improving resources easier to find. By building consistency and accessibility into the backend, we have ensured that Not A Phase remains visible and reachable at a time when that reachability is a form of radical resistance.

“Working with Studio Lutalica has been such a great experience for us at Not A Phase. As a charity that focuses on uplifting the lives of trans+ adults, we were cautious about finding the right organisation to help us with our website development, and the team at Lutalica have gone above and beyond to make sure everything was done with care and consideration, helping us to achieve an impactful look that really adds to the Not A Phase brand!”
